Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted how the coming together of India and Brazil strengthens the voice of the global south on the international stage. He called for reform of international institutions to address contemporary challenges and reaffirmed the resolve of India and Brazil to work together in this direction.
He made these comments during a joint press conference with Brazilian President Lula in the Brazilian capital.
The partnership between India and Brazil has been strong and influential on the global stage. As a democratic nation, we will continue to advance the priorities and aspirations of the Global South. When India and Brazil work together, the voices of the Global South become even stronger and more confident.
Prime Minister Modi also said, “We believe that all problems should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. India and Brazil are unanimous that terrorism and its supporters are the enemies of all humanity. We also agree that reform of global institutions is necessary to meet the challenges of our times. We will continue to work together in this direction.”
In his address, Prime Minister Modi said that cooperation in the areas of agriculture capable of dealing with climate change, precision farming and bio-fertilizers will strengthen the food security of both the countries.
The agreement on critical minerals and rare metals is an important step towards building a stronger supply chain. Our cooperation in the defense sector is also continuously increasing. This is a great example of mutual trust and strategic coordination. We will continue to strengthen this beneficial partnership.
Prime Minister Modi further said, “There is immense potential for cooperation in the health and pharmaceutical sectors as well. We will work to increase the supply of affordable and quality medicines from India to Brazil.”
He also said that the discussions between the two leaders were aimed at moving forward in all sectors in a spirit of shared purpose and both nations are committed to taking bilateral trade to more than US$20 billion in the next five years.
He thanked the President of Brazil for participating in the Global AI Impact Summit and also praised his visionary leadership in promoting India-Brazil relations.
This morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also held delegation level talks.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal were present during the talks.
Today on Saturday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is on a state visit to India, was formally welcomed in the courtyard of Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Lula was given a guard of honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Modi and President Draupadi Murmu welcomed the Brazilian President at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
He also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Lula’s visit to India follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brazil in July 2025, which will be the first by an Indian prime minister in more than 50 years.
The President of Brazil has reached India with a large delegation of CEOs of top Brazilian companies. These CEOs are expected to participate in a business forum.
