Indian Railways has now taken a historic leap towards environmental protection along with speed on the tracks. Moving ahead from the era of diesel and electric engines, the country’s first hydrogen train has been ready. This is not just a new train, but the beginning of a ‘Green Revolution’ in the history of Indian transport. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has confirmed in the Parliament that this train is completely ready under the pilot project and soon it will be seen running on the tracks, which can change the picture of rail travel.
World’s most powerful and longest hydrogen train: Preparation for pollution-free journey with 10 coaches and capacity of 2400 kilowatts
This hydrogen train made in India is very advanced technically. It is considered to be one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen trains in the world. A total of 10 coaches have been installed in this train, which makes it different from hydrogen trains running in other countries. Its total capacity is 2400 kW, which makes it capable of pulling heavy loads and reaching high speeds. The train design includes two state-of-the-art driving power cars, with a capacity of 1200-1200 kW. Eight passenger coaches have been added to them. The most important thing is that this train is completely pollution free. It will produce neither smoke nor carbon emissions, making it the greatest example of ‘green transportation’ of the future.
Train ‘fuel’ will be prepared in Jind, Haryana: Green hydrogen is being made from water and electricity, completely safe for the environment.
Railways has also made concrete arrangements for the supply of fuel to run the hydrogen train. For this, a special hydrogen plant has been set up in Jind district of Haryana. Here, hydrogen gas is being prepared with the help of water and electricity using very modern technology. The energy generated from this process is called ‘Green Hydrogen’, because it does not cause any harm to the environment. While diesel engines cause heavy pollution, this technology will prove helpful in achieving the goal of zero pollution.
Career opportunity for youth: Will they have to study separately or will the old process of becoming a loco pilot remain applicable?
After the arrival of this new train, there are many questions in the minds of the youth, especially those who want jobs in Railways. The biggest question is whether any new course or degree will be required to run a hydrogen train? According to Railway rules, no separate educational qualification is required for this. To become a loco pilot of a hydrogen train, one will have to follow the same process as for normal trains. First of all the candidate has to be selected for the post of Loco Pilot in Indian Railways. For this, it is mandatory to have ITI (Electrician, Fitter, Mechanic etc.) or Diploma in Engineering. After being selected, on the basis of experience, they can be given the responsibility of running hydrogen trains.

Hydrogen train is a new technology, hence Railways does not want to take any care regarding safety and operation. When these trains hit the tracks regularly, loco pilots will be given special technical and safety training so that they can handle this new system efficiently. Whereas, if we talk about salary, the starting salary of a loco pilot in Indian Railways is usually Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 per month, which includes many allowances. As experience increases and responsibility increases, this salary increases. An experienced loco pilot can earn anywhere between Rs 35,000 to Rs 1,00,000 a month depending on his grade and posting.
