The government has now become more strict than ever regarding road safety in India. In this direction, a historic decision related to two-wheelers has been taken.
From June 2026, it will be mandatory to install ABS in all motorcycles and scooters with engines of 125cc or less.

That means now the time has come to say goodbye to the Combi Braking System (CBS) present in entry-level bikes.

Why did the government have to take such a big step?

Accidents involving small engine bikes have increased rapidly in the last few years.
The report of the Road Transport Ministry is shocking—

In 2023, 45% of the total road accident deaths in the country were related to two-wheelers.

In most of the cases, the main reason was skidding or loss of control of the bike due to sudden braking.

The government believes that entry-level two-wheelers are the most driven on Indian roads. Therefore, it has now become mandatory to provide them with better braking technology.

CBS vs ABS — What’s the difference?

CBS (Combi Braking System)

applies equal pressure to both wheels when the brakes are applied

Control is fine, but there is a fear of skidding during fast braking.

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)

Prevents wheels from locking during braking

Skidding is less, bike remains stable

Rider control increases

Chances of fatal accidents are significantly reduced

The government estimates that with the introduction of ABS, the safety of millions of riders will improve and accidents related to small engine bikes will reduce.

Now it will be necessary to buy two helmets along with the new bike.

Along with ABS, the government has implemented another safety change—
From June 2026, it will be mandatory to buy two helmets with every new bike/scooter.

Its purpose is clear:

Not only the driver, but also the safety of the pillion rider is equally important.

Pillion rider sitting without helmet has been found to be the major cause of deaths in road accidents.

Why did these rules become extremely important?

Thousands of people lose their lives in motorcycle accidents every year in India.

Safety features were very limited in entry-level bikes

With ABS and dual helmets becoming mandatory, safety standards will increase in a big way.

Now security will not just be a luxury of premium bikes, but the right of every citizen.

Simply meant for common riders

ABS—standard feature in all new bikes up to 125cc

CBS system will now shut down

It is legally mandatory to buy two helmets when buying a new bike.

This step will take India closer to global road safety standards.
