At least nine people died and two others went missing due to continuous rains in the Darjeeling hills in West Bengal on Saturday. Officials gave this information on Saturday. He said that the houses were swept away in one of the big landslides near the Mirik-Sukhiapokhari road in Darjeeling subdivision and the movement of vehicles was interrupted, causing communication connectivity to nearby villages.

Darjeeling Police has released the helpline number to help tourists. Tourists who are trapped or who need help can contact Darjeeling Police Control Room at +91 91478 89078.

This torrential rains have been the most damaged in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim. Landslides have occurred in many places in Mirik and Sukia areas. 2 people have been reported dead in a big landslide in Jasbir Basti area of ​​Darjeeling district.

PM Modi expressed grief

Expressing grief over this incident, PM Modi wrote on X, “I am extremely saddened by the loss of life and property in a bridge accident in Darjeeling. Consideration of the people who have lost their loved ones. I wish the injured to get well soon. In view of heavy rains and landslides, the situation in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas is being strictly monitored. We are committed to provide all possible people.”

Trouble in rescue operation

The official said that due to continuous rains, it has become difficult to reach the affected site of Economy and emergency vehicles. He said, “The area is slippery and there are reports of many houses being damaged. The loss is yet to be assessed.” According to preliminary information, the landslide occurred near a hill slope on the Mirik-Sukhiapokhari route, which disrupted the movement of vehicles and communication connectivity in many surrounding areas. Teams of the State Disaster Management Department and Darjeeling District Administration have been deployed with local volunteers to assist in rescue operations.

According to the information, the iron bridge over the Balasan river in Dudhia area used to connect Siliguri and Mirik, which was damaged due to heavy rains in the early hours of Sunday.

Please tell that West Bengal has received heavy rainfall for the last several days, in which many people have lost their lives. Meanwhile, BJP MP from Darjeeling in Bengal, Raju Bisht said that many people have died and property has suffered heavy losses due to heavy rains. However, he has not yet revealed the exact number of the dead. Officials said that at least four people are expected to be killed due to landslides in Mirik.
