NPCI roll back UPI Mapper Facility: National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has currently withdrawn the decision to implement its new UPI Mapper Rule. This rule was supposed to allow UPI users to choose which UPI app (like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm etc.) will be the default app to receive their money.
But due to problems faced by TPAPs (third-party UPI apps) and problems faced by users, NPCI has stopped it for now.
🔹How did the UPI system work earlier?
When a user created UPI ID on PhonePe, GPay or Paytm for the first time,
👉 The same app always remained the default.
No matter how many new UPI apps you add later,
👉 Payment always opened automatically in the same first app.
Example:
If you first created a UPI ID on PhonePe, UPI always opened on PhonePe when you clicked on the payment link — even if you installed Paytm later.
🔹What was going to change in UPI Mapper Rule?
User could choose on which app to receive payment
That means your UPI ID would remain the same, but you could decide the default app yourself.
This would break the “monopoly” of PhonePe-Google Pay and also create an opportunity for small UPI apps.
🔹Then why did NPCI stop it?
Sudden change causes glitches in many apps
Users started getting confused due to change in UPI flow.
Risk started increasing in big systems like IMPS/UPI
Therefore NPCI said –
👉 “This rule will not be implemented until all the apps are completely ready.”
✅ What does this mean for users at the moment?
What will happen now? Impact on users: Only the old system will work. UPI will run as smoothly as before. The default app will remain the same as used earlier. No changes, no new settings, nothing for the user to do.
