Congress general secretary and communication in -charge Jairam Ramesh on Sunday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed Manipur visit to Manipur, calling it an insult to the people of the state. The Congress MP shared a newspaper cutting about the preparations for the yatra in a post on X and said that it seems that Prime Minister would spend only three hours in Manipur.

He said, “This is actually an insult to the people of the state who have waited for 29 long and painful months. On September 13, there will be no really visit to the Prime Minister, who once again revealed his apathy and insensitivity to the people of Manipur.”

Earlier on Thursday, the Congress MP had also questioned the role of the GST Council and asked if it has been limited to a formality. He said that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced major tax measures after the council meeting, while the Prime Minister had already given information about these decisions in his speech of Independence Day.

Jairam Ramesh wrote on ‘X’, “The Union Finance Minister made several big announcements after the meeting of GST Council, which is a constitutional body last evening. However, before the GST Council meeting, the Prime Minister announced its decisions in his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2025. Will GST Council be limited to a formalities?”

He stressed that the Congress party has been advocating reforms in GST for a long time, which will reduce the prices of many large consumption goods and will be cut in taxes. He said that these reforms will increase the burden of compliance on MSME and increase the scope of GST.

He said, “The Indian National Congress has been advocating GST 2.0 for a long time, which reduces the number of rates, cuts rates on mass consumption, reduces tax evasion, wrong classification and disputes, inverted fees framework (reduced output compared to input), reduce compliance burden on MSME and expand GST coverage.”
