President Draupadi Murmu on Friday said that India’s national song ‘Vande Mataram’ is a symbol of emotional consciousness and unity of the people of the country.
Murmu said in a post on ‘X’, “On the glorious occasion of completion of 150 years of this song, let all the countrymen take a firm resolve that we will keep Bharat Mata ‘Sujla’, ‘Suphala’ and ‘Sukhada’ as per the spirit of this song. Vande Mataram.”
The President also recalled that in the 19th century, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay had composed the song ‘Vande Mataram’ in the background of the Sanyasi rebellion against the British rule, which became a source of inspiration for the people since the time of the Swadeshi movement of 1905. He said, “Since then, this song of worship of Bharat Mata has been and will continue to be the proclamation of emotional consciousness and unity of our countrymen.” He said that after independence, the country respectfully adopted it as the national anthem.
According to an official statement, November 7 this year marks the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, which means “Mother, I bow to you.” The composition, an enduring anthem, has inspired countless generations of freedom fighters and nation builders and remains an enduring symbol of India’s national identity and collective spirit.
Vande Mataram was first published in the literary magazine ‘Bangadarshan’ on November 7, 1875 and was composed by Rabindranath Tagore.
