New Delhi. Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has said that India will stop importing urea by the end of 2025. So much urea fertilizer will be produced in the country that there will be no need to import urea from outside. Minister Mandaviya said that availability of fertilizers is very important for farming in the country. Mandaviya said that now the government is trying to promote alternative fertilizers like nano liquid urea and nano liquid di-ammonium phosphate (DAP). He said that “use of alternative fertilizers is good for the health of crops and soil.
When asked about achieving self-reliance in the production of urea fertilizer, Mandaviya said that the Modi government has adopted a two-pronged strategy to eliminate dependence on urea imports. Mandaviya highlighted that the government has restarted four closed urea factories and is working on restarting another closed factory. He said that to meet the domestic demand, India needs about 350 lakh tonnes of urea annually. Mandaviya said that the installed domestic production capacity has increased from 225 lakh tonnes to about 310 lakh tonnes in 2014-15.
Urea import to end by 2025
Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that at present the gap between annual domestic production and demand is about 40 lakh tonnes. Mandaviya said that after the commissioning of the fifth urea factory, the annual domestic production capacity of urea will reach about 325 lakh tonnes. The government aims to replace the use of 20-25 lakh tonnes of conventional urea with nano liquid urea. He said that our agenda is very clear. By the end of 2025, PM Narendra Modi will end the country’s import dependence on urea. Due to which the import bill of urea will become zero.

Urea import was 75.8 lakh tonnes
According to government data, the import of urea decreased to 75.8 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 from 91.36 lakh tonnes last year. Urea import was 98.28 lakh tonnes in 2020-21, 91.23 lakh tonnes in 2019-20 and 74.81 lakh tonnes in 2018-19. Mandaviya said that the Center has also protected Indian farmers from the sharp rise in fertilizer prices in the global markets by increasing subsidies on key fertilizers. For 2024-25, the government has allocated a fertilizer subsidy of Rs 1.64 lakh crore against the revised estimate of Rs 1.89 lakh crore for the 2023-24 financial year. Fertilizer subsidy increased to Rs 2.55 lakh crore in 2022-23.
