Thiruvananthapuram. CBI officials reached the official residence of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday. The CBI is here to investigate the sexual harassment complaint against former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the prime accused in the infamous solar scam, and collect evidence. In fact, Congress leader Oommen Chandy lived here during his tenure as the Chief Minister. Chandy lived at Cliff House with his family and employees from 2011-16.
The CBI registered six cases based on the complaint of the main accused in the solar scam. The victim had alleged that she was sexually harassed by six leaders, including five top Congress leaders. These include Chandy, Lok Sabha member Adoor Prakash, AICC general secretary (organisation) Hibi Eden, Rajya Sabha member K.C. Venugopal and former state minister and Congress MLA A.P. Apart from Anil Kumar, National BJP Vice President A.P. Abdullah Kutty’s name is included.
The team will collect evidence from home in the presence of the complainant.
It is written in the complaint that Chandy’s then security officer had called him to Cliff House in 2012. While Chandy sexually assaulted her.
On 5 April, the investigative team, accompanied by the ‘victim’, reached the high-security Kerala Assembly Quarter as part of the collection of evidence in the case against Eden.
Incidentally, the ‘victim’ had made a complaint against Vijayan, who handed it over to the CBI.
Just before the April 2021 assembly elections, Vijayan referred the petition to the CBI, which agreed to investigate.
After this, the CBI has so far filed three cases in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court and one in the CJM Kochi court.
However, the Kerala Police investigation found that there was nothing to prove the crime and Chandy has always maintained that he did nothing wrong and is not afraid of any investigation and will cooperate fully in the investigation.
One of the main reasons why the Chandy government did not get a second term in 2016 was the scandal involving the ‘victim’ of Chandy’s office and a few others, which were widely used by the Left in their election campaigns.
The woman and her then live-in partner allegedly sold solar schemes and collected money from several people and cheated them. Meanwhile, his links with some of Chandy’s office workers came to the fore, becoming the Left’s biggest campaign issue.
This was one of the reasons why the Congress-led UDF government suffered a defeat in 2016.
