Two-time Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan was unanimously elected Speaker of the 16th Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday. On Monday, CM Bhagwant Mann proposed Sandhwan’s name in the House. Mann also congratulated him on being elected speaker. He also urged the Speaker to allow live telecast of the proceedings of the House.
46-year-old Sandhwan won the Kotkapura assembly seat by defeating Congress candidate Ajaypal Singh Sandhu by a margin of 21,130 votes in the assembly elections. He is the grandson of Jagir Singh, the real brother of former President Zail Singh, and holds a degree in Automobile Engineering from Karnataka University. Sandhwan has replaced former president Rana KP Singh. He has been the president of your Kisan branch.
Sandhwan made his political journey in 2003 from the Sarpanch election of the village. He won the election and then became the sarpanch. In 2012, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party. In the 2017 elections, contested for the first time as MLA from Kotkapura and won by about 10 thousand votes.
After becoming the speaker, Sandhwan said that whatever duty is assigned by the party, he will perform it with readiness. Kultar Singh’s mother Gurmel Kaur said that she is confident that the son will fulfill the responsibility. He hopes that he will work for the betterment of the people by living up to the expectations of the people.
Congress MLA Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Ashwini Sharma, Congress MLAs Pratap Singh Bajwa and Sukhpal Singh Khaira also congratulated Sandhwan among the opposition legislators. Opposition members hoped that the Speaker would give them an equal opportunity to raise public issues in the House.
