Mamata Banerjee’s government has suffered a major setback in the Birbhum violence case. The investigation of the case has been handed over to the CBI. The Kolkata High Court has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to handle the investigation into the case of eight people burnt alive in West Bengal’s Birbhum. The Mamata Banerjee government had requested not to hand over the investigation to the CBI, which was rejected by the High Court.
Now the Special Investigation Team, set up by the Bengal government, will hand over the matter to the CBI. A division bench of the Calcutta High Court comprising Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice R Bhardwaj asked the CBI to file a progress report by April 7. A team of Central Forensic Science Laboratory is reaching the spot and collecting samples and evidence.
