Isn’t this strange? Memories of old relationships often remain in even private and secret things like passwords. Every day, when unlocking their phone, logging into email, or turning on their laptop, people silently (or sometimes even loudly) repeat the name of their ex-girlfriend, ex-boyfriend, or crush. But did you know that in the world of cyber security, using the name X is considered a very weak password? However, psychologically, it tells the story of your memories, attachments and incomplete emotions. You or many people you know may have used your ex’s name as a password for various things. Today, we will tell you about the psychological reasons behind using X as a password.

3 reasons to use X as your password
According to Aaj Tak Podcast, the answer is simple. Passwords are not just technical; It is also an emotional support. When someone is very close in a relationship, his/her name gets deeply settled in the mind. Even after a breakup, that name comes to mind immediately, that’s why many people use it as a password. This happens for three reasons: emotional memories, nostalgia and incomplete attachment, and control or power dynamics. In simple words, while creating a password, the mind works not with logic but with the heart, hence the name of X, along with the memories, comes into the password.

What do experts say?

The brain doesn’t forget these, even on autopilot, but from a cybersecurity perspective, these are considered very weak and dangerous passwords. There are some emotional reasons behind using the name X as a password, which is important to understand.

easy to recall memories
According to Cosmopolitan.in, psychologists believe that passwords are often created from the things that most automatically come to mind, like someone’s name, an old crush, or a memory. People often follow the same patterns in relationships over a long period of time, so the ex’s name becomes like muscle memory, and even after a breakup it doesn’t get out of their mind.

attachment and breakup
According to attachmentproject.com, our exes often become an attachment symbol. After a breakup, it takes time for the brain to let go of things associated with that relationship (names, times, dates, places). According to Marriage.com, people who think about their ex frequently after a breakup unconsciously create passwords using their ex’s name so that they can stay connected to their memories.

Control, Secret Links, and Passive-Aggression
According to talktoangel.com, in some cases, creating a password with the name X is like maintaining a secret “emotional link.” It’s like saying to yourself that this chapter is not completely closed yet. ToiTime says that some partners deliberately use the name of their ex or old crush as a password, as a form of passive-aggressive behavior or hidden resentment towards their current partner.

Trying to hide negative emotions
According to attachmentproject.com, people who avoid or suppress their emotions often take indirect routes rather than dealing with the pain of a breakup directly. They look normal on the outside, but inside, they try to keep the memory of their ex alive on some pretext or the other. This kind of hidden connection relaxes the mind for some time, but ultimately slows down the process of moving forward.

Secret story and part of identity
According to Cosmopolitan.in, for some people, the password becomes a private code for their personal story, fantasy or relationship history, which is not visible from the outside, but makes them feel good from the inside. When the relationship was very intense or it was first love, using ex’s name in the password can also seem like permanently embedding that relationship in your identity.
