Kolkata . The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has started investigation into the attack on judicial officers in West Bengal. With this, the total number of arrests made by Bengal Police in this case till Friday afternoon has increased to 33. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar has handed over the investigation into the attack on officials in Malda district of West Bengal to the NIA. Officials said that the NIA took action on Friday and registered a preliminary inquiry. Here, while confirming the number of arrests, Additional Director General (ADG) of North Bengal K. Jayaraman said that the police have registered a total of 19 cases. These cases relate to misbehavior with officials and illegal road blocking in different areas of Kaliachak. This process of blocking the road started on Wednesday and continued till Thursday.
He said that out of the 33 arrests, the main accused and the mastermind of this entire incident is Mofakkarul Islam. He is a lawyer by profession and a leader of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). He was arrested at Bagdogra airport in Darjeeling district on Friday morning while he was trying to flee the state.
He said, “He was the main person who was instigating the mob in Kaliachak on Wednesday. He was arrested at the Bagdogra airport along with his close associate Akarmul Bagani. Their plan was to flee to Bengaluru. Since the NIA has taken over the investigation, if they wish, Islam will be handed over to them.”
He also confirmed that three cases have been registered against Islam in connection with the Kaliachak incident. ADG Jayaraman further said, “Investigation is underway to find out whether he has been involved in any mischief or criminal activity anywhere else. Strict action will be taken against him as per legal provisions. He will not be spared.”
