From today, new rules related to online gaming have come into effect across the country. The government’s *Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026* have been implemented across the country from today. The purpose of these rules is not only to bring order to the gaming industry but also to provide a safe digital space for gamers. With the implementation of these rules, the online gaming industry will benefit from a centralized legal framework. Under the new rules, online gaming has been divided into three parts, and games where money is at stake are now completely banned. Let us know in detail what impact is expected from the implementation of these new rules.
What will change under the new online gaming rules?
The new rules have been created with a focus on user safety, safe gaming practices and overall growth of the industry. Till now, different states operated under different rules. These new rules try to remove such confusion and bring uniformity. With their implementation, games played for money have now been completely banned. Provisions for strict punitive action have also been made for any violation of these rules. If a person repeatedly violates the rules related to online gaming for money, he can be jailed for up to three years and fined up to ₹1 crore. Similarly, if a person advertises online gaming services for money, the rules provide for a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to ₹2 crore.
Games were divided into three parts
Under the new rules, gaming activities have been divided into three different categories. The *e-sports* category includes professional and competitive gaming, as well as games based on skill and strategy. The *Online Social Games* category includes games designed for entertainment and learning purposes—especially those that are generally considered safe. The third category is *Online Money Games*, which has now been completely banned. A central authority has been given the authority to decide and assign specific categories to any sport.
How will this affect gamers?
The new rules place a lot of emphasis on ensuring the safety and security of gamers. User age verification, time limit control, parental controls and complaint redressal system are mandatory under the new rules. Hopefully these measures will help prevent gaming addiction. Furthermore, these rules will help protect individuals from financial losses.
