Guwahati, May 14 (IANS). Assam Police seized drugs worth about Rs 21.36 crore and arrested five people in Kamrup district in a major anti-narcotics operation. Officials informed about this action on Thursday.
This action was taken jointly by Kamrup Police and Assam Special Task Force on the basis of special intelligence information.
According to police, a bus coming from the neighboring state was stopped during the operation at Amingaon on the outskirts of Guwahati.
After a thorough search of the vehicle, the security personnel found 2.5 kg of heroin and 8 kg of opium hidden inside the bus.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared information about this action on social media platform ‘X’ and praised the police teams involved in this operation.
He said, “A large quantity of drugs have been seized in Assam. Drugs worth Rs 21.36 crore have been recovered in the joint action of Kamrup Police and STF. Police sources said that the arrested people are being interrogated to find out where the drugs came from and where they were being transported, as well as investigating their links with the interstate smuggling network.
Officials suspect that these drugs may be part of a larger smuggling network operating in the north-eastern region.
This seizure has taken place under the ‘Assam Against Drugs’ campaign of the Assam government, which has been launched by the state administration.
Over the past few years, Assam Police and other agencies have launched several operations against drug smugglers and gangs in the state.
