Guwahati, January 4 (IANS). Six people were injured when the escort vehicle carrying Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s convoy met with an accident in Assam. The police officer gave this information.
At least six people, including four policemen, were injured when a vehicle traveling in the convoy of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met with a road accident in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Sunday, police said.
The incident occurred near Hatiyali area under the jurisdiction of Chabua police station. The accident occurred after a vehicle in the Union Minister’s convoy collided with a vehicle carrying a person. Union Minister Sonowal was going to his native village Bindhakata in Chabua.
Confirming the incident, Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Abhijeet Dilip said that all the injured persons were immediately rushed to the hospital through the ambulance accompanying the convoy.
The SSP further said, “Six people have been injured in the accident, of which four are policemen who were deployed as part of the security squad.”
The injured were admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital. Doctors said that everyone’s condition is stable and they are out of danger.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Rajya Sabha MP Rameshwar Teli had a narrow escape in the incident.
After ensuring that the injured were taken care of, the two MPs continued their journey, officials said.
Initial reports suggest that the collision occurred due to sudden movement of vehicles on a busy road, however a detailed investigation is underway to find out the exact cause of the accident.
The damaged vehicles were removed from the road so that normal traffic could flow smoothly.
Police officials said that necessary legal procedures have been initiated and further investigation is underway.
Due to this incident, traffic in the area was disrupted for some time, but the situation soon returned to normal.
