Kolkata, March 2 (IANS). A 28-year-old man died of stroke in Birbhum district of West Bengal. His family alleges that he was under stress after his name was put in the under adjudication category in the final voter list published after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
After the news of death spread, tension spread in Dhalla village of Alunda Panchayat of Suri on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Sheikh Kamrul (28), who worked on contract and was the sole earner of his family. His family consists of parents, wife and two small children.
According to family members, Kamarul became upset when he came to know that his name was in the under adjudication category in the final voter list, while his wife’s name was in the approved category.
His family claimed that he seemed upset when he returned home on Sunday night. His mother alleged that he was under pressure for some time due to the SIR process and was complaining of headache. Janjahra Bibi said, “My son was under pressure for a long time due to SIR. He was having headaches. His condition worsened on Sunday night. He was taken to Suri Sadar Hospital, where doctors said he had suffered a stroke. He was referred to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. But, he died before he could be taken there.”
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged that the youth’s death was linked to fear and stress caused by the SIR exercise and criticized the BJP and the Election Commission on the issue.
However, BJP rejected these allegations and said that TMC has a habit of attributing deaths due to disease to the SIR process. A local leader of BJP said that there is nothing to say on this. Death is tragic, but politicizing it is even more unfortunate.
