Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam, all political parties are putting in all their efforts to ensure their victory. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday (April 2, 2026) addressed a huge election rally in Titabar assembly constituency of Assam. Rahul Gandhi had come here to campaign in support of Congress candidate Pran Kurmi. Titabar is considered a Congress stronghold; This is the region from where former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi won several elections and led Assam for three consecutive terms.
Rahul Gandhi addressed the rally
Addressing the gathering, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He stressed that whatever has been snatched away from the public will have to be returned, and the Chief Minister will have to apologize for this. He said, “Whatever has been taken from the people will have to be given back. The Chief Minister will have to apologise; however, mere apology will not be enough—we would like to address this through the law. Wherever he goes—whether near or far—he will be held accountable. No matter how much he shouts or jumps, he cannot escape the law.”
Rahul Gandhi mentioned ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’
Referring to the rich cultural heritage of Assam, Rahul Gandhi remarked that this land belonged to great personalities like Srimanta Sankardev, Bhupen Hazarika, Jyoti Prasad Agarwal and Zubin Garg—personalities who consistently promoted the messages of love, unity and integrity. Referring to his own visit, the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ (Journey to Connect India), he said, “We had talked about spreading love across the country. The people of Assam also believe in the same spirit; however, the Chief Minister here is completely disconnected from this ethos and is only engaged in spreading hatred.” Citing the example of Zubeen Garg, Rahul Gandhi said that he truly embodies the true spirit of Assam. He further added, “Any poor person who went to him would always return smiling.” “He always talked about unity and humanity.”
Rahul targeted CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Rahul Gandhi alleged that Himanta Biswa Sarma betrayed former chief minister Tarun Gogoi and the BJP government has failed to fulfill its past promises. He termed the promise of giving ₹500 to tea garden workers (TGL) as completely false. Apart from this, he also termed the promises made to six specific communities as incomplete. He also alleged that land in Assam has been handed over to a few select industrialists and state government decisions are being decided from Delhi. Also targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that the policies of Assam are being compromised under the pressure of the Central Government. At the end of the rally, Rahul Gandhi said, “This election is a fight between the ideologies of love and hate. Support the Congress and help form a government for the poor and the common people.”
