New Delhi, June 5 (IANS). After the recent tragic accidents in the capital Delhi due to illegal construction, ignorance of fire safety standards and administrative negligence, the Delhi government has adopted a strict stance. After the high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Home Minister Ashish Sood announced several important administrative decisions. He said the government is taking unprecedented steps to establish the rule of law, curb corruption and ensure accountability.

The Minister said that till now there were difficulties in implementing many corrective and structural works due to different agencies working at different levels. In view of this, the government has decided to bring all the concerned units under a coordinated system. Along with this, the powers of the District Magistrate (DM) will also be increased, so that effective monitoring and prompt action can be ensured at the local level.
Ashish Sood said that the Delhi government has decided to strictly implement the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005. Under this, legal action will be taken against those who violate government orders and safety standards. He clarified that if landlords and operators of commercial establishments ignore the rules, they could face a jail sentence of up to two years.
