Once again, election atmosphere is going to prevail in the entire country. Assembly elections are going to be held in five states in the coming days, and preparations for these elections have started in full swing. The Election Commission of India, in a press conference held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today at 4:00 pm, announced the election schedule for these five states. As soon as the news of the elections broke, an important question arose in the minds of many new voters: If their name is not yet in the voter list, will they be able to cast their vote in the upcoming elections? Actually, before every election, a large number of people try to get their names added to the voter list. In such a situation, the question now arises: When the election dates have been officially announced, what are the provisions regarding the rules for adding names to the voter list?

When and where will the assembly elections be held?
This time, assembly elections are going to be held in five states across the country. These include Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to the election schedule, voting will start first in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry on April 9. Voting for constituencies in these three states will be held on the same day. After this, voting will take place in Tamil Nadu on 23 April.

Whereas in West Bengal, elections will be conducted in two phases. Here the first phase is scheduled on 23 April and the second phase is scheduled on 29 April. Voting will take place for a total of 294 constituencies in West Bengal. When the entire electoral process is over, the results of all these states will be declared together on May 4, 2026. These results will decide which party will form the government in each state for the next five years.

Can names still be added to the voter list?
Now the important question is: If a person’s name is not yet in the voter list, can they get their name added at this stage also? As per Election Commission rules, once the election dates are officially announced and the final voter list is published, the work of adding new names is usually stopped. This means that voting takes place only on the basis of the final, published voter list. However, those who have already submitted their applications—and whose verification is still pending—may also find their names included in the list. Therefore, if a person has turned 18 and wants to vote, he or she should apply well in advance of the election. Applications can be submitted through the Voter Portal of the Election Commission of India or through the nearest election office. This increases the chances that their name will be included in the voter list on time.
