Guwahati, April 1 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, claiming that the party has lost its organizational base in the state and its chances of electoral success in the upcoming assembly elections are very slim.
Addressing journalists during the election campaign in Tongla, Sarma said that Congress has now become a non-existent party. It no longer has any base left in Assam. The party will not be able to achieve success in the elections.
He stressed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to enjoy strong grassroots support across the state.
The Chief Minister also criticized the Congress for mentioning famous Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in its election manifesto. He termed this step as highly condemnable. He said that dragging a cultural figure into political debates shows bad thinking and hurts public sentiments.
On the proposal of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi to visit Assam, Sarma said that he is not worried about its political impact. Sarma said that Owaisi will visit only those assembly constituencies where BJP is not strong. He will campaign in areas where Congress still has some base. Pointing out that such steps will not affect BJP’s electoral prospects.
Sarma further expressed confidence that the BJP will secure a decisive mandate in the 2026 assembly elections. He cited the government’s development agenda and public welfare schemes as the main factors that gained voters’ support.
A contest is expected between several parties in the Assam Assembly elections. While on one hand the BJP-led NDA is aiming to come to power for the third consecutive time, on the other hand, Congress and other opposition parties are trying to strengthen their position.
