Congress on Friday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his first death anniversary. Let us tell you that Manmohan Singh died at the age of 92 on December 26, 2024 in Delhi due to old age related health problems.
It is noteworthy that Manmohan Singh’s last rites were performed with state honors at Nigambodh Ghat at Kashmere Gate in Delhi on 28 December, in which his family, friends, colleagues and government dignitaries were present.
The party, in a post on Twitter, stressed that Singh’s leadership strengthened India’s economy and democracy.
Congress posted on Twitter: “On the death anniversary of Dr. Manmohan Singh, we remember a great statesman who epitomized integrity, humility and vision. His leadership strengthened India’s economy and democracy. Our tribute to the Prime Minister who served the nation selflessly and with determination.”
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also paid heartfelt tribute to the veteran Congress leader.
Shivkumar reminded that Manmohan Singh advocated transparency through the Right to Information Act of 2005 and upheld the dignity of work through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which has now been renamed as the Grow India Guarantee Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) (VB-G RAM G) Act.

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) faction MP Supriya Sule said, “Today is the death anniversary of the country’s former Prime Minister, father of economic reforms and world-renowned economist Dr. Manmohan Singh. On this occasion, we pay heartfelt tribute to his memory.”
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar posted, “On the first death anniversary of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji, we remember a politician whose life was defined by intelligence, honesty and unwavering service to the nation.”
Manmohan Singh, born on September 26, 1932, was a noted economist and served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. Between 1991 and 1996, Singh served as the Finance Minister of India, during which time he played a key role in implementing macroeconomic reforms for which he received global recognition. He was the 13th Prime Minister of India, who held office from 2004 to 2014.
For many, his name remains synonymous with the transformational changes of that era. His government launched several important initiatives, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), later renamed MGNREGA, and the Right to Information Act (RTI) in 2005, which significantly improved transparency between the government and the public.
After his second term, Singh retired from public life. He had taken India through a period of unprecedented development and international fame. After the defeat of the Congress-led UPA government in the general elections in 2014, Narendra Modi succeeded him.
