New Delhi, March 19 (IANS). The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Election Commission (ECI) to investigate the case of former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K. Take a decision as soon as possible on the registration application of her proposed political party ‘Telangana Praja Jagriti’ filed by Kavitha.
A single bench of Justice Amit Bansal gave this order. Gave this while hearing the petition filed on behalf of Kavita. Kavita had filed this petition as the president of her proposed party, alleging that the Election Commission has not yet taken any action on the application filed under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The petition stated that ‘Telangana Praja Jagriti’ was formed in a general meeting duly held on January 19, 2026, in which the constitution of the party was adopted and office-bearers were given the right to apply for registration. After this, on January 23, the application along with all the necessary documents like party constitution, notarized affidavit, list of 151 members, certified minutes of the meeting and prescribed fee was submitted to the ECI, which was also accepted on January 27.
However, the petition alleged that since then the Commission has not initiated any statutory process such as examining the application, issuing a public notice or giving an opportunity of being heard. Describing it as arbitrary and unfair, it was said that it is a violation of Articles 14 and 19(1)(c) of the Constitution.
Kavitha also argued that local body elections are going on in Telangana and the process of upcoming elections is also about to begin, hence due to the delay her party is not able to participate in the elections with its name and election symbol.
After hearing the case, Delhi High Court directed the Election Commission to take an expeditious decision on the application and disposed of the petition.
It is noteworthy that K. Kavita, which is written by former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, had left the party last year after differences with BRS and announced the formation of a new political party. He has also expressed his desire to contest the upcoming assembly elections, citing Siddhipet or Bodhan seat as his primary choice.
