Kolkata, October 13 (IANS). Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Monday, reacting to the Durgapur gang rape case, said that there is no society or nation where such cases do not happen.
This statement comes a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s advice to girls to avoid going out at night.
Speaking to reporters, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said, “There will be one or two such cases in any society, you will not find any country in the world where this does not happen.”
He also informed that the West Bengal government has passed the Aparajita Bill, however, it is yet to get assent from the President.
Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said, “We believe that this is a heinous crime. We want the culprit to be punished. We had passed the Aparajita Bill in the West Bengal Assembly and then it went to Delhi, but the central government did not allow it. It is lying with the President. Whatever the government says, the President does. Despite our demand, it was not passed. So the responsibility for this is on the central government.”
The second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside the college campus in Durgapur on October 10. She had gone out for dinner with her male friend.
Those arrested in the Durgapur rape case have been identified as Shaikh Reyazuddin, Apu Bauri and Firdous Shaikh. Apart from this, one more person was arrested on Monday morning.
According to the police, the student had come out of the campus for dinner with a male friend when some youths riding a motorcycle started following them and passing obscene comments at them.
The accused allegedly chased away the student’s friend, dragged her to a wooded area behind the campus and gang-raped her. They also snatched his mobile phone and threw it away.
On returning from college, her male friend and others found the injured student lying on the ground. He was admitted to the local hospital. Police have confirmed that she is a resident of Jaleshwar, Odisha.
Meanwhile, the BJP has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing similar incidents in the past, saying she has a “habit of blaming the victims.”
