Indore, 30 December (IANS). Many people reportedly fell ill after drinking contaminated water in Bhagirathpura, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in which three people have died so far and many are hospitalized. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has expressed grief over this incident.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ that the incident that took place in Bhagirathpura area of Indore is very sad. Paying tribute to the deceased, he said that I pray for the speedy recovery of all those undergoing treatment.
The Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh to the family of each deceased. The state government will bear the cost of treatment of all affected people.
He assured that the administration will ensure their safety.
There is panic in Bhagirathpura after three deaths and increasing number of hospitalizations, allegedly due to contaminated tap water.
More than 66 people have been admitted to other places including government and private hospitals.
22 medical teams comprising doctors have been deployed in villages whose water supply is likely to be contaminated.
Reacting to the incident, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari demanded accountability.
“Three people have died, and the Indore Municipal Commissioner and the Mayor should be held responsible for this,” Patwari said during a visit to the hospital on Tuesday evening.
Initial investigation suggests leakage in the pipeline or dirt in the overhead tank during the ongoing excavation work nearby as the possible cause of the crisis.
Residents expressed disappointment, saying they had repeatedly informed authorities about the smelly and dirty water, but received no timely response.
The Chief Medical and Health Officer told the media that hospitals are on high alert. About 60 people have been recruited so far.
