New Delhi, April 5 (IANS). New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Sunday led the ‘One Tree in the Name of Mother’ tree plantation drive in Lakshmibai Nagar in which residents of the area, including government employees, actively participated.
Chahal said that planting trees is a symbol of our cultural beliefs and respect for nature. He drew parallels between a mother raising her children and the care of plants by residents.
While the participants were taking pledge to plant saplings and take care and protect them, the NDMC Vice President said that this initiative is inspired by the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, which encourages citizens to plant a tree in the honor of their mothers and nurture it with responsibility and commitment.
He said that members of women, children and resident welfare associations participated enthusiastically in this initiative.
Chahal said women’s active participation in the campaign also sparked discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill, and many women appreciated Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to end the 40-year quota wait for women.
He led a tree plantation drive at Tikona Park near Lakshmibai Nagar market in Lakshmibai Nagar.
On this occasion, Rajesh Kumar Meena, President, Resident Welfare Association (RWA), was present along with a large number of residents of Laxmibai Nagar and enthusiastically participated in the tree plantation drive.
Chahal said that NDMC has prepared a ‘Green Calendar’ for the entire year, under which tree plantation drives will be organized every Sunday in various areas under the jurisdiction of NDMC.
He said that to ensure the success of this campaign, the horticulture, health, civil and sanitation departments of NDMC will work in coordination to ensure scientific plantation, proper maintenance and monitoring of the plants, so that they can grow into sustainable green areas in future.
Earlier on March 1, Chahal led a ‘one tree in the name of mother’ plantation at Gandhi Sadan in the NDMC housing complex on Mandir Marg, in which residents of the area actively participated, an official said.
Addressing the gathering, NDMC Vice Chairman emphasized that the campaign is being run in mission mode to ensure maximum expansion of green cover in the NDMC area, according to the official statement.
