A total of 37 seats will be given to allies: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday (March 17, 2026) announced that the BJP will contest 89 seats in the upcoming assembly elections, while its allies will be given a total of 37 seats. After the BJP’s Central Election Committee meeting, the Assam Chief Minister said that discussions regarding seat sharing are in the final stages and the alliance will soon finalize its election strategy.
In the last assembly elections, BJP had contested 92 seats, while AGP was given 26 seats and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) was given 8 seats. The NDA’s victory in 2021 was particularly significant as it was the first time a non-Congress alliance had retained power in Assam for a second consecutive term. Seat distribution has always played an important role in Assam politics, especially in areas like Bodoland, where regional parties have considerable influence.
BJP-AGP alliance had performed well in the last elections.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We are preparing to fight the elections in coordination to ensure better performance.” There are a total of 126 seats in the Assam Assembly, and election activities have intensified across the state. All the political parties are currently busy finalizing their alliance and candidates. In the 2021 assembly elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power by winning 75 out of 126 seats. BJP alone won 60 seats, while AGP won 9 seats.
