Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed his gratitude towards the people and government of Ethiopia after being awarded the ‘Great Honor Mark of Ethiopia’, calling it a matter of immense pride and a recognition of the enduring ties between the two countries.

In a post on Twitter, Prime Minister Modi thanked Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and said it was an honor to be honored by one of the world’s most ancient and rich civilizations.

He said that this award belongs to the countless Indians who have contributed to strengthening the partnership between India and Ethiopia over the years.

The Prime Minister wrote, “I am grateful to the people and Government of Ethiopia, as well as to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, for presenting me with the ‘Great Mark of Honor of Ethiopia’ yesterday evening. It is a matter of great pride for me to be honored by one of the world’s most ancient and rich civilizations. This honor is a tribute to the countless Indians who have shaped and strengthened our partnership over the years.”

Prime Minister Modi also said that India is committed to further strengthening bilateral relations with Ethiopia to address global challenges and create new opportunities for future cooperation.

“India is committed to further strengthening cooperation with Ethiopia to address global challenges and create new opportunities,” Prime Minister Modi later wrote.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ethiopia presented its highest award, the Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said this honor is dedicated to the countless Indians whose trust, contribution and efforts have shaped and strengthened the bilateral partnership.

Prime Minister Modi is the first global head of state or government to receive this award. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali presented him the award.

This highest honor of Ethiopia is the 28th top foreign state award conferred on Prime Minister Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ethiopia has elevated bilateral relations to the level of ‘Strategic Partnership’, a significant achievement in India-Ethiopia relations. The visit produced several important outcomes, including agreements on tailored cooperation, the establishment of a data center and UN peacekeeping training.

India and Ethiopia signed an MoU on debt restructuring under the G20 common framework, reflecting cooperation on economic issues. Doubling ICCR scholarships for Ethiopian students and launching specialized science courses under ITEC have boosted educational exchanges.
