Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted citizens on Mahashivratri and prayed for their welfare and prosperity.
In an ‘X’ post, the Prime Minister sought the blessings of Lord Shiva, emphasizing that the divine grace of Lord Shiva bestows peace, prosperity and spiritual strength to individuals and the nation.

Mahashivratri, celebrated with utmost devotion across India, marks the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees observe fast, offer prayers and participate in night vigils to seek the blessings of the deity.
According to Hindu mythology, on his wedding night, Lord Shiva was escorted to the home of Goddess Parvati by a diverse group of Hindu deities, animals and demons. The Shiva-Shakti pair is considered a symbol of love, power and unity. The festival of Mahashivratri, symbolizing their sacred union, is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm throughout India.
Union Minister Nityanand Rai also visited Pataleshwar temple in Hajipur on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
On Sunday, a large number of devotees reached Sangam Ghats to participate in the holy Mahashivratri bath of Magh Mela.
The administration has imposed tight security arrangements and mobile patrol teams of Uttar Pradesh ATS are actively monitoring the Prayagraj Magh Mela 2026 as pilgrims continue to flock for the holy dip.
Magh Mela officer Rishi Raj said that Mahashivratri is the last bathing festival of Magh Mela, in which a large number of devotees come. He informed that till now about 10 lakh people have taken the holy bath.
Apart from Prayagraj, a large number of devotees also gathered at Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri. A huge crowd was seen at the temple premises, where devotees were queuing up since morning to seek blessings.
Similarly, huge crowds of devotees gathered in temples across the country. Aarti ceremonies were held at Mini Somnath Temple in Ahmedabad, Aap Shambhu Mahadev Temple in Reasi and Nageshwarnath Temple in Ayodhya, where devotees offered prayers devoutly.
