Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the death of Haryana police officer Y Puran Kumar is not a matter of honor of one family, but it is a matter of honor of all Dalits. He asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to take immediate action in the matter.
Addressing reporters after meeting the family of the senior police officer who was found dead at his Chandigarh residence last week, Gandhi said Kumar was subjected to systematic discrimination to break his morale and harm his career. There were bullet marks on the body of the IPS officer.
The former Congress president said, “A wrong message is being given to Dalits… that no matter how successful you become, if you are a Dalit, you can be suppressed and crushed.”He said that the Haryana Chief Minister has not fulfilled his promise of an independent and impartial investigation.
Gandhi said there is a lot of pressure on Kumar’s family, especially his two daughters.
Kumar’s visit comes amid increasing attacks by the opposition on the Haryana government over his alleged suicide.
Kumar (52) had reportedly left an eight-page final note accusing eight senior IPS officers, including Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujit Kapoor and now transferred Rohtak Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarania, of “caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and torture”.
