The Congress on Monday alleged that the “double engine” government in Rajasthan is opening the doors to not only mining but also real estate development, which will further damage the “already devastated” ecosystem of the Aravalli.
Congress general secretary and former environment minister Jairam Ramesh also said that all this was being done against the recommendations of the Forest Survey of India (FSI).
“The country is currently waiting for the latest directions from the Supreme Court on Aravali. Here is further evidence that the new definition of Aravali will cause further devastation to this already devastated ecosystem,” he said in a post on ‘X’.“The issue is not just about mining, against the recommendations of the FCIA, the double engine government of New Delhi and Jaipur is also opening the doors to real estate development,” he said.
Amid the controversy over the new definition of the Aravalli hills, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the issue and will hear the matter on Monday.
The case will be heard by a vacation bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant and comprising Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice Augustine George Masih.
The Supreme Court on November 20, while accepting a uniform definition of the Aravalli hills and ranges, had put on hold the allocation of new mining leases in the Aravalli areas spread across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat till the expert report comes.
