Chennai, January 1 (IANS). Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth on Thursday said the Tamil Nadu government should immediately address the long-pending demands of the agitating secondary grade teachers and sanitation workers. He made it clear that his party stands strongly with both these classes.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Premalatha said the complaints raised by teachers and sanitation workers are completely legitimate and the government should look into it seriously without any delay. He urged the government to talk to the protesters and reach a just and permanent solution.

He said, “These people play a very important role in the smooth functioning of the society. Their demands cannot be ignored.”

Commenting on the political developments ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, the DMDK leader said the upcoming elections will be unprecedented in the history of Tamil Nadu. He expressed confidence that there will be major realignment in the politics of the state and there is a strong possibility of formation of a coalition government after the elections.

Premalatha reiterated that the DMDK will take a final decision on its electoral alliance only after the party’s state convention to be held on January 9. He said, “After a detailed discussion at the conference, the party will decide its future strategy. Only the alliance of which we will be a part will win the assembly elections.”

On the question of DMDK receiving invitation during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Tamil Nadu on January 4, Premalatha said that her party has not received any such information or invitation. He said that at present the party is focusing on strengthening the organization and preparations for the state conference.

Premlata also expressed serious concern over the increasing menace of drug addiction in the state. He demanded the government to strictly ban the sale and distribution of narcotics and warned that drug addiction is becoming a major threat to the future of the youth.

Meanwhile, a separate announcement was made by the party that a meeting of DMDK district secretaries will be held on January 5 at the party headquarters in Koyambedu, Chennai. The meeting is likely to discuss organizational issues, preparations for the state conference and political strategy ahead of the assembly elections.
