Now a new controversy seems to be breaking out for the Congress government of Telangana even before the Jubilee Hills by-election. The state government and the Waqf Board had allotted about 2500 square yards of land to the Muslim community in Shekhpet area, which was planned to be used as a cemetery. However, the Army has expressed its ownership rights on this land and clearly stated that this land belongs to the Defense Department.
ban on construction activities
Army officials reached the spot and completely stopped the cemetery construction activities and warned not to allow any construction work in future also. Let us tell you, this controversy has made the Jubilee Hills by-election even more sensitive, where the votes of the Muslim community play a decisive role. Regarding this step of the Congress government, opposition parties have started accusing it of appeasement politics.
At present, preparations for the by-election on Jubilee Hills Assembly seat are going on continuously and this controversy can seriously affect the election environment.
land allotment for cemetery
The Telangana Waqf Board had allotted the land near Ghairabad Mosque in Shekhpet for a Muslim cemetery. The main objective of this land was to meet the cemetery needs of the rapidly increasing population of the Muslim community in areas like Jubilee Hills, Borabanda, Yusufguda, Erragadda, and Rahmatnagar. The move was presented by the Congress government as its election promise.
Controversy broke out after army’s objection
However, the Army has not given permission to build a cemetery on this land. Army officials say that this land is under the Defense Ministry and cannot be used for any other purpose. Following this objection, the cemetery construction work was immediately stopped and the army took control of the land.
Jubilee Hills by-election and political perspective
The by-election in Jubilee Hills assembly constituency is to be held on 11 November 2025. There are approximately 30% Muslim voters in this area, who can play a big role in the election results. Congress had presented this move as its commitment towards the Muslim community, while opposition parties have termed it as vote bank politics.
On this, local residents protested heavily against the allotment of land for the cemetery in Shekhpet. They said that this land is near a residential area and this could seriously affect their lifestyle. Opposition parties have also termed this step as a step taken for political gain.
Let us tell you, the Jubilee Hills cemetery dispute has brought to the fore the challenge of balancing between the election promises of the Congress government, the land rights of the Army and the needs of the Muslim community. The dispute could seriously impact political strategies and relations between communities in the by-elections due next month.
