Bulandshahr, January 28 (IANS). In Bulandshahr, 10 booth presidents of BJP have collectively resigned. The main reason for the resignation is the ‘Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026’ recently notified by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which is said to have caused huge anger among the upper caste community.
These booth presidents Vinay Kumar Gupta (booth 268), Rajveer Singh (261), Purushottam Chauhan (269), Chandrashekhar Sharma (270), Neeraj Kumar (202), Praveen Radhav (271), Mukesh Kumar (272), Shivendra Chauhan (263) and Satendra Chauhan (274) have submitted their resignation letters on January 28, 2026. It is written in the letter that the upper caste community has always been a staunch supporter of BJP, but there is a lot of anger among the upper caste community due to the new rules of UGC. This has been termed as a law that describes the upper castes as tyrannical and exploitative, making it impossible to convey the party’s plans to the masses.
The resignation letter said, “There is a lot of anger among the upper caste community due to the UGC draft made by the government. It appears that the upper caste community has always been tyrannical and exploitative. There is a lot of anger among the upper caste community due to this type of law and we are facing a lot of anger in spreading the word about the work and schemes of BJP to the people.”
He demanded that if the UGC law was not withdrawn, he should be relieved of the entire booth committee along with the post of booth president. The copy of the resignation letter has also gone viral on social media.
The resignation is part of the growing protest against UGC rules in Uttar Pradesh. The UGC notified these rules on January 13, 2026, which mandate the establishment of an equity committee, helpline, monitoring team and grievance redressal mechanism to prevent caste discrimination in higher education institutions. The rules primarily focus on discrimination against SC, ST and OBC students, leading to apprehensions among general category students and supporters that it is one-sided and will not provide protection to upper caste students, or may be misused by creating fake complaints.
In many districts of UP like Pilibhit, Saharanpur, Firozabad, Baghpat, Rae Bareli, Lucknow etc., BJP officials, booth presidents and workers have resigned. Upper caste organizations demonstrated and at some places petitions were filed in the Supreme Court. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan clarified that the rules will not be misused and will remain within the ambit of the Constitution.
