Shimla, May 17 (IANS). Voting is being held for four municipal corporations in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. Long queues of voters were seen at polling booths in the morning. The four municipal corporations where voting is being held today include Solan, Mandi, Dharamshala and Palampur.
Voting for the four municipal corporations in Himachal Pradesh started at 7 am. A total of 1,147 candidates are in the fray for 439 posts in these four municipal corporations.
With the commencement of Municipal Corporation elections in Solan, people are arriving to cast their votes. At the same time, voting also started at 7 am at the Mangwai booth of Mandi Municipal Corporation. Voters at Samkhetar Model Polling Station (Ward 27, 28, 29) participated with full enthusiasm as part of the democratic process.
Speaking to IANS, a woman voter said, “I want good people to come forward in democracy and work for the progress of the country. Whoever wins these municipal elections, he should work properly for the development of the entire ward and area.”
One person said, “I have come here to vote. Every person should take part in this. A good representative should be elected who will complete all the development works in the ward.”
Apart from four municipal corporations, elections are also being held for 25 city councils (municipal councils) and 22 nagar panchayats within the state. Counting of votes for Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats will begin immediately after the end of polling. However, the results of four municipal corporations (Solan, Mandi, Palampur and Dharamshala) will be declared on May 31.
The State Election Commission has directed all the polling personnel to conduct the elections with complete fairness. The Commission has warned that strict action will be taken if any lapse or negligence in duty is found.
