Voting started in Parliament House on Tuesday for the election of the country’s new Vice President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi first voted. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of Telangana and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Odisha have separated themselves from this election. Both parties have announced not to support any alliance. In Rajya SabhaBRS K4 and BJD have 7 MPs, whose vote can make the match a little more interesting.
The Shiromani Akali Dal has kept distance from voting citing the flood situation in Punjab, while AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has openly supported opposition candidate Reddy. At the same time, YSR Congress (YSRCP) 11 MPs of NDA will support Radhakrishnan.
This election is being held because former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on 21 July citing poor health. His term was till 10 August 2027. Now the candidate who wins will complete the remaining tenure.
If all MPs vote according to the party line, then Radhakrishan is likely to get 422 votes and Reddy is likely to get 319 votes, due to which the victory of the NDA candidate is almost fixed. However, the possibility of cross voting cannot be ruled out due to secret voting, which may affect the result.
The Vice President is elected by the elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. However, no party can be released by any party in this election. Every MP votes as per his choice. It remains to be seen whether the estimates prove correct or cross voting gives a new political indication. The eyes across the country will be on the counting of votes starting at 6 pm and its results.
