There was a heated debate in the Lok Sabha between the government and the opposition on the issues of census and reservation. During this debate, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and Union Home Minister Amit Shah came face to face. Both the leaders answered each other’s questions and allegations, due to which the atmosphere in the House became quite heated.

The debate started with the issue of census. Questioning the government’s stance, Akhilesh Yadav asked why there is so much delay in conducting the census. He stressed that the government deliberately wants to avoid conducting the census, because as soon as the census is conducted and caste-based data comes out, the demand for reservation for backward classes will become louder. He argued that the government wanted to avoid this reality and was therefore taking hasty decisions on other matters to mislead the public.

The question of reservation for Muslim women on the basis of religion does not arise.

Akhilesh Yadav’s question about Prime Minister

Akhilesh Yadav also raised the issue that when the Prime Minister had sought votes from the people of backward classes, he had described himself as a backward caste. But now—when it comes to the actual census and rights—the government seems to be in retreat. In response to this, Amit Shah said that some statements of the opposition are creating confusion and anxiety among the public. He clearly clarified that the census work has already started and the government has in fact decided to conduct the caste-based census as well. He explained that the work that is going on now is counting the houses – and the houses have no caste of their own. Taking a dig at the opposition, he said that if the Samajwadi Party had its way, they would probably have given caste to the houses also. Responding further on the matter, Amit Shah said that if the Samajwadi Party wishes, it is free to give all its election tickets to Muslim women as per its wish; The government has no objection to this. Following this statement, the House witnessed more heated exchanges and heated debates.

During the heated debate in Parliament on the Women’s Reservation Bill, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav sought a separate quota for Muslim women, to which Home Minister Amit Shah termed religion-based reservation as illegal and said, “If the Samajwadi Party gives all its tickets to Muslim women, where do we have any objection”. pic.twitter.com/P8fUeVZgz7

Mention of Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav

During the debate, Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav was also mentioned. Responding to one of his statements, Amit Shah pointed out that Yadav had advocated reservation for Muslim women—a proposal that violates the Constitution. Shah clearly said that the Constitution of India does not allow reservation on the basis of religion. In response to this, Akhilesh Yadav asked whether Muslim women are not half the population of the country? She argued that if reservation for women was being discussed, women from all sections of society should be included in it.
