Mild earthquake tremors were felt in Uttarkashi on Tuesday. The intensity of the earthquake was 3.6 and its center was at a depth of 5 kilometers from the ground. Since the intensity was low, the tremors were not felt very strong. Uttarkashi region is considered seismically sensitive. At present there is no news of any loss of life or property.

On 20 October 1991, an earthquake occurred in Uttarkashi, which caused massive devastation in the Garhwal Himalayan region. Whenever any disaster occurs in Uttarkashi, people often mention the earthquake of that year. At that time earthquake tremors were felt for about two months and during this period a total of 142 earthquake incidents were recorded.
The Uttarkashi earthquake of 1991 brought a lot of devastation. 768 people lost their lives and 5066 people were injured in this earthquake. A total of 20184 houses were completely destroyed and 74714 houses were significantly damaged. The intensity of the earthquake in the hilly area was 6.6 magnitude. Its impact was so strong that mild tremors were felt till Delhi. The earthquake caused several landslides in the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana valleys, causing additional damage.
