E-sports industry: With the release of draft rules this month, ‘E-Sports’ is going to be officially recognized as a national sport. This draft can change the landscape of Indian e-gaming forever.
E-sports will now be specifically regulated under the ‘The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules 2025’ under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. This system will give e-sports out of the confusion and regulator dislocation with gambling.
In addition, an online gaming authority will register ESPORTES THELS. This will ensure following the Authority rules and will settle the complaints. If seen, now e-sports have found the same administrative structure that is seen in cricket or hockey.
Now e-sports will be considered as skill-based, competitive activity, which differs from a fantasy or luck-based game. That is, the titles related to gambling will remain outside. At the same time, recognized e-sports titles will get the right to be organized as government protection, financial nutritional opportunities and official sports events.
Registration of e-sports events and titles will be mandatory, so that they can get official recognition, government cooperation and security of media rights. E-sports are clearly distinguished from gambling. It has been clearly stated in the rules that the sports related to betting will not get the status of ESPORS under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.
The draft rules will soon be notified in the ‘Gazette of India’. As soon as this happens, e-sports will change from the marginalized industry to emerge as a government support game. Even if this journey will not be completed immediately, the direction is now very clear.
Till now, e-sport in India was flourishing in a gray-area. Prize pools were growing, teams were being formed, brands were sponsoring, but there was no formal recognition. The players were not considered ‘athletes’ and the tournaments were not preserved under the Sports Act. Now this situation will change completely.
