New Delhi, November 19 (IANS). ‘123456’ has become the most used password in India for the second consecutive year. This information was given in a report released on Wednesday.
Password manager NordPass has analyzed the passwords used by users in 44 countries, with a special focus on passwords used by different generations.
The report said that Indians use very weak and predictable passwords.
The passwords that are being used the most. ‘123456’ is on top among them. After this, the names of ‘PASS Atdate 123’, ‘ADMIN’, ‘12345678’, ‘12345’ and ‘123456789’ are included.
The report said that despite the at rate and capital letters, passwords like ‘ADMIA atdate123’, ‘password atdate123’ and ‘ABCD atdate1234’ could be easily detected.
Richter’s note said that many Indians want to strengthen their passwords through special characters, but due to simple patterns, hackers can easily detect them.
The expert warned that passwords created with the help of names certainly appear unique, but they can be easily broken through automated attacks.
123456 is the most used password not only in India but also globally. This is followed by ADMIN and 12345678.
Karolis Arbasiauskas, head of product at NordPass, said improvements in password hygiene have been slow despite years of awareness campaigns.
Arbasiauskas further said that until passwordless authentication methods like Passkey become widespread, strong and unique passwords are necessary.
“About 80 percent of data breaches are caused by weak, reused or compromised passwords,” he said.
The report also found that generational differences in setting passwords are negligible.
The most popular passwords among 18-year-olds are very similar to those used by 80-year-olds. Passwords like “12345” and “123456” are the choice of every age group.
