New Delhi, July 5 (IANS). India is rapidly making huge leaps in the field of semiconductor manufacturing. Union Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnav said that five semiconductor plants are expected to be fully operational in the country by the end of 2026. With this, India will establish its strong presence in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Central Government has so far approved 12 semiconductor projects. Three of these projects have now begun commercial production, while two other plants are set for inauguration in the next few months.
He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the country’s first and second semiconductor plants on 28 February 2026 and 31 March 2026. Now the third CG Semi (OSAT) facility located at Sanand (Gujarat) has also started commercial production. This has strengthened the world’s confidence in India’s semiconductor capability and reliability.
Ashwini Vaishnav said that under the visionary leadership of PM Modi, a strong semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem is being created in the country, which will become the strong foundation of developed India.
He also attributed this achievement to the active cooperation and better implementation of the Gujarat Government. According to him, CG Semi Plant completed the journey from Bhoomi Pujan to commercial production in just 27 months, which is a big achievement in itself.
The Union Minister said that this plant is not only a symbol of technical success but also of social change. Many young women from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala and Gujarat are working as operators here. He was also sent to Malaysia for special training. In future, such world class training will be made available in India only.
Semiconductors produced in this plant will be used in automobiles, scooters and industrial equipment. Besides, they will also be exported to Japan, America and Europe, due to which India will become an important part of the global semiconductor supply chain.
The Bhoomi Pujan of CG Semi Plant took place on 13 March 2024. Built at a cost of over Rs 7,600 crore, the project has been developed in partnership with Japan’s Renesas Electronics, giving India access to global technology, modern manufacturing processes and quality standards.
Ashwini Vaishnav also said that India’s electronics manufacturing sector has now become an industry worth Rs 13 lakh crore and has provided employment to more than 25 lakh people.
