Ahmedabad, May 26 (IANS). Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) on Tuesday said it has commissioned a cumulative 3.37 gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the world’s largest single-location battery storage system outside China and the fastest completed globally.
The capacity of 1.37 gigawatt-hour of battery energy storage system has been added in March 2026, taking AGEN’s operational BESS capacity at Khavra, Gujarat to 3.37 GW, the Adani Group company said in a statement.
“Large-scale energy storage will play a decisive role in the next phase of India’s clean energy transition. As renewable energy capacity expands rapidly, storage infrastructure becomes critical to deliver reliable, round-the-clock clean power,” said Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEN.
With the commissioning of 3.37 GWh BESS capacity at Khawra, AGEN is strengthening the foundation of flexible, dispatchable and resilient energy systems.
“Our investment in battery storage reflects our long-term commitment to building future-ready clean energy infrastructure globally,” Sagar Adani said.
The 3.37 GWh BESS capacity can store enough clean energy to power approximately one million homes for an entire day, meeting the highest electricity demand of cities like Indore, Chandigarh or the entire state of Goa.
It can power more than 12 million LED bulbs for up to 10 hours continuously.
This will be a game changer as battery storage will help stabilize the renewable heavy grid and provide green energy round the clock.
According to the company, the project was delivered within just 10 months from the start of on-site construction, making it one of the fastest utility-scale battery storage deployments globally.
This commissioning is a major milestone in strengthening grid reliability, peak-hour supply and enabling renewable energy to deliver reliable, round-the-clock power at scale.
AGEN plans to add over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY27 and expand this to 50 GWh over the next five years.
The BESS project integrates advanced energy management systems with lithium-ion battery technologies to optimize efficiency, reliability and grid response.
AGEN’s BESS project is strategically located in Khavda, Gujarat to further strengthen the world’s largest renewable energy plant, where AGEN is developing 30 GW by 2029, of which 9.9 GW is already operational.
