Ahmedabad, June 22 (IANS). Adani Group’s Ambuja Cements on Monday announced it has partnered with UK-based clean technology company Lilac Ltd, under which the two companies will develop one of the world’s largest commercial-scale low-carbon cement production routes at Sanghipuram in Gujarat’s Kutch district.

Adani Group company said that if this project is successful, it can be increased by 7 to 8 times. This will capture more than 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, creating an effective and scalable model for low-carbon cement production not only in India but across the world.

Karan Adani, Director, Ambuja Cements, said that taking the cement industry towards a low-carbon future will require bold thinking, technological innovation and collaboration across the value chain.

“Our partnership with Lilac is proof that we are evaluating new technologies that can reduce emissions from the production process, increase energy efficiency and support long-term sustainable development,” he said.

Karan Adani further said that this initiative is in line with our vision to develop world-class manufacturing facilities for the future.

This partnership is an important part of Ambuja Cements’ broader decarbonization strategy and supports its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, which is also recognized by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI).

This commercial demonstration project will be launched at Ambuja Cements’ 6.6 MTPA capacity Sanghi plant in Sanghipuram to test the potential of low emission cement production by incorporating Lilac’s carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology.

According to the company, this technology will help in greater use of renewable electricity and capture of inevitable carbon dioxide emitted from the production process.

This technology has been created to develop a system in which coal consumption can be completely reduced to zero. Besides, alternative fuels can also be used in a better way.

Daniel Rennie, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lilac Limited, said that Ambuja Cements operates one of the largest and most advanced cement manufacturing networks in the world.

He said, “We are extremely excited to launch this collaboration. Our aim is to develop a commercial-scale project for low-cost and low-carbon cement production. Together we want to offer an economical, repeatable and future-proof solution for the global cement industry.”

The company says this partnership will also help in reducing the cost of carbon capture, thereby strengthening the economic base for large-scale adoption of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology.

Ambuja Cements is also currently working rapidly on electrification of cement manufacturing processes. The company has captive green energy capacity of about 1 GW, through which the use of renewable energy is being increased.

The company believes that such initiatives will create a strong foundation for implementing cutting-edge technologies like carbon capture on a larger scale in the future.
