New Delhi, June 11 (IANS). Amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, the government on Thursday said India’s fertilizer security remains strong and adequate stocks are available to meet demand for the ongoing Kharif sowing season.
Also, the government also indicated that the fertilizer subsidy burden for the current financial year may be reviewed following the sharp fall in global urea prices.
Aparna S, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, at the ministries’ press conference on recent developments in West Asia. Sharma said that the fertilizer stock in the country is in a satisfactory condition and is capable of meeting the needs of farming.
“The fertilizer stock in the country is in a satisfactory condition. India’s fertilizer security remains as strong as before,” Sharma said.
He said the government’s initial fertilizer subsidy estimate for 2026-27 was prepared based on current market trends.
However, recent developments in the global market, especially the low rates revealed in the new urea import tender, may require a reassessment of the subsidy.
According to Sharma, the government will reconsider the subsidy estimates after confirming the quantities supplied by suppliers and assessing the total import requirement.
This re-assessment is being done after the government company National Fertilizers Limited has received bids for more than 6 million tonnes of urea as against the tender to import 1.7 million tonnes of urea.
The sharp fall in urea prices in the global market is expected to help in controlling the expenditure on fertilizer subsidy and will also ensure adequate availability of nutrients for the upcoming Rabi season.
Sharma credited long-term supply agreements, joint ventures abroad and the combined efforts of Indian missions abroad for ensuring continuous supply of fertilizers.
He informed that India has secured supply of urea from countries like Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Georgia, Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Egypt, Algeria, Turkey and Netherlands.
DAP and NPK fertilizers have been imported from countries like Russia, Morocco, Egypt, America, Jordan, South Korea, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.
