Thunderstorm Warning App: Now a new technology has emerged to prevent accidents caused by lightning. ‘Damini App’, developed by a joint initiative of India Meteorological Department (IMD) and IITM Pune, is capable of warning people before thunderstorms.
Every year hundreds of people across the country lose their lives due to lightning. Farmers working in fields, people traveling outdoors and people living in rural areas are most at risk. Thunderstorms come suddenly and give very little chance to recover.
‘Damini App’ is a modern way to reduce this threat. The app monitors lightning activity across India and tracks potential thunderstorms within a radius of 20 to 40 kilometers around the user’s location.
The biggest feature is that it sends an alert to the mobile about 40 minutes before a possible thunderstorm. Through GPS technology, as soon as there is a possibility of lightning falling in any area, the user gets immediate notification, which gives enough time to move to a safe place.
The app also has a map feature, allowing users to see where thunderstorms are likely to occur across the country. Alerts are shown in different colors – yellow color alerts 10 minutes earlier, while blue color alerts 15 minutes earlier.
With ‘Damini App’ the risk caused by lightning can now be reduced to a great extent and it can prove to be a lifesaver especially for farmers and people in rural areas.
