If you use Instagram for chatting, then there is a big update for you. Starting this May, chatting on Instagram will no longer be as secure as it is now. The reason for this is the company’s decision to remove end-to-end encryption from the platform. Meta has stated that it will not provide end-to-end encryption protection for messages after May 8, 2026. The company has started informing users about this change by sending notifications inside the app.
What effect will this have?
Turning off end-to-end encryption means your messages on Instagram will no longer be private; Meta will be able to access them. In other words, if you chat with someone on Instagram, Meta—in addition to you and other users—will be able to read that conversation. Instagram first introduced end-to-end encryption protection for messages in December 2023, and now, less than three years later, the feature is being retired.
What options do users have now?
Meta has said that if any user feels that this change will affect their chat, then new instructions regarding this will be issued soon. These instructions will explain how users can download their chat data. Along with the chat logs, the company will also offer the option to download the related media files.
Why is this change being made?
Meta has not yet officially commented on the specific reasons behind this change; However, it is generally believed that the feature is being shut down due to growing concerns over child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on the internet. By turning off end-to-end encryption, Instagram will be able to scan messages and calls to detect CSAM and other questionable content. It is worth noting that governments of many countries—including those of the European Union—are pressuring social media platforms to detect and remove CSAM and other objectionable content.
