New Delhi, January 1 (IANS). State-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Thursday launched Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) services, also known as Wi-Fi calling, nationally on the occasion of New Year.
BSNL said that this advanced service is now available to all customers in all telecom circles in the country, ensuring uninterrupted and high quality connectivity even in challenging environments.
Through this service, BSNL customers will now be able to make calls easily using WiFi.
According to BSNL, this service is especially beneficial in rural and remote areas where mobile coverage may be limited, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services is available.
VoWiFi also helps in reducing network congestion and is available free of cost, customers will not have to pay any additional charges for Wi-Fi calls.
“VoWiFi lets customers make and receive voice calls and messages over Wi-Fi networks, ensuring clear and reliable connectivity even in areas with weak mobile signals such as homes, offices, basements and remote areas,” the communications ministry said in a statement.
VoWiFi is an IMS-based service that facilitates seamless handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
Calls are made using the customer’s existing mobile number and phone dialer, with no third-party applications required.
“VoWiFi is supported on most modern smartphones. Customers simply need to turn on Wi-Fi calling in the settings of their handset. For device compatibility and assistance, customers can visit the nearest BSNL customer care center or contact the BSNL helpline number 18001503,” the ministry said.
The launch of VoWiFi is an important step in BSNL’s network modernization program and reflects its commitment to improve connectivity across the country, especially in underserved areas, the ministry said in a statement.
