Surat, May 26 (IANS). Due to rising fuel prices and government promotion, the demand for electric vehicles (EV) is increasing. Also, people are rapidly adopting EVs due to strong charging infrastructure and tax benefits. This information was given by an AUTO officer.

Speaking to news agency IANS, Assistant RTO Ankit Shah said that people have strongly supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to adopt electric vehicles and reduce dependence on traditional fuels.

“People have overwhelmingly supported his appeal. Registration of electric vehicles has increased significantly,” Shah said. He further said that expansion of charging infrastructure and tax benefits have played an important role in the adoption of electric vehicles.

“The Gujarat government gives subsidies to various electric vehicles. The Department of Motor Vehicles gives tax exemption on electric vehicles. The tax rate on normal petrol and diesel vehicles is 6 per cent, while on electric vehicles it has been reduced to 1 per cent,” he told IANS.

The increasing demand is clearly visible from the dealers also. Shagun Soni, sales manager at Cargo Group BYD car dealer in Surat, said that due to rising global tensions and fears of rising fuel prices, more people are considering electric vehicles.

“There is a war-like situation in many places. The prices of petrol and diesel have increased,” Soni said. He further informed that the dealership sold around 90 cars in the last three months, out of which 65 vehicles have been delivered to customers.

He said customers are responding positively to the brand and he is confident that the company’s growth in India will accelerate once local production begins. “The company is in a period of expansion,” he said.

Consumers are also paying attention to global EV brands and advanced battery technology when making purchases.
