The use of social media has increased significantly in recent times. Be it children or adults, everyone is spending more and more time on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. However, this is a matter of concern, especially for children. Perhaps that is why the Goa government is considering banning the use of social media for children below 16 years of age. The Minister of State himself has indicated this. He says that mobile addiction and exposure to wrong content has a negative impact on the mental health of children, and it is important to protect them from these harms.

This move by the Goa government seems to be in line with Australia’s rules, as concerns about the mental health of children are increasing, especially in a country where more than a billion people use the internet. According to a Reuters report, Goa authorities are researching Australian laws to decide how to regulate the use of social media platforms by minors.

Why does Goa government want to ban social media?

Goa government says that nowadays very young children are using mobile phones and social media excessively, which is having serious consequences on their health. Hours of screen time can damage their eyesight and lead to sleep disorders, which can have a negative impact on their mental development. Additionally, there are often inappropriate videos, harmful content, and dangerous people on social media. As a result, children easily fall under their influence. Cyberbullying is also becoming a big problem. Keeping all these things in mind, the Goa government is planning to keep children below 16 years of age away from social media.

This news has started a wide discussion in the entire country. Parents, teachers and social media users are giving their opinion on this issue. In a statement to Reuters this week, state Information Technology Minister Rohan Khaunte said, “If possible, we will impose a similar ban on social media use for children under 16.” The minister’s statement has sparked speculation about how such a ban will be implemented.

Andhra Pradesh can also ban

Apart from Goa, Andhra Pradesh state, with a population of more than 53 million, has also indicated it is considering similar measures. Compared to other states, Goa is the smallest in terms of area, with an estimated population of just over 1.5 million.

Australia has already taken such a step

Countries like Australia have already implemented such restrictions. Strict rules have been made regarding the use of social media for children under 16 years of age. The Australian government has forbidden children from using apps like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. The government says that this will protect the childhood of children and encourage them to spend more time with books, playing and their families instead of spending time on mobile devices.
