Sonapur-Tepasiya, January 12 (IANS). Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) is going to add a new chapter in the history of Northeast India. The university is preparing for the launch of its first satellite mission, which is being seen as a major leap towards space research and innovation in the region.
This satellite has been named ‘Lachit-1’ and is being developed entirely by the students of the university under the guidance of faculty members. With this, ADBU Northeast will become the first university in India which is going to launch such an ambitious space mission.
This historic project was started in the year 2022 under the leadership of Professor Bikramjit Kakati. To take the mission forward, a core team of five students has been formed, who are leading the entire project. Apart from this, different groups of about 20 students are actively working in important technical areas like satellite design, engineering, data systems, communication and mission planning. This project is proving to be a unique opportunity for the students to connect academic knowledge with real technical application.
Students associated with the project say that this initiative is the result of years of teamwork, technical learning and innovation. According to him, through this mission they will get practical experience of real-world satellite technology, which will be very useful for making a career in the field of space science and advanced technology in future.
Speaking to IANS, Dinesh Baishya, Director of Indigenous Knowledge at Assam Don Bosco University, described this mission as historic for Northeast India. He said that this would be the first mission of its kind in the region. He clarified that this will be the first time in the history of Northeast India when students and teachers of a university will together launch a satellite, which will give a new identity to the educational and technological capabilities of the region.
Satellite ‘Lachit-1’ is named after the great Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan, who defended Assam against the Mughal forces. Lachit Borphukan is considered a symbol of courage, leadership and indigenous pride. The aim of the university is to develop these values in young innovators, so that they remain connected to their cultural heritage along with technology.
Lachit-1 satellite is designed to monitor landslides, floods, weather patterns and environmental changes. This satellite will provide important data to strengthen efforts related to disaster management, climate research and environmental protection in Northeast India, so that effective steps can be taken in time.
The university administration has also clarified that the main objective of this mission is to empower students through experiential education. Through this initiative, young minds will be inspired to pursue careers in space science and satellite technology. With this historic endeavor, Assam Don Bosco University NorthEast is poised to firmly place India on the national space innovation map and inspire the new generation to dream beyond the skies, to reach the stars.
